4 Things to Look for When Buying Used Tires 4 Things to Look for When Buying Used Tires

When you’re in the market for some new tires, it can be tempting to buy used ones. After all, they’re cheaper, and you don’t have to wait for them to be delivered. But before you buy, there are a few things you need to look for.

Check the tread

The first thing to check is the tread. If it’s too worn, the tires might not be safe to use. You can usually tell how much tread is left by looking at the tire’s sidewall. There should be a series of lines running around the tire. If you can see the bottom of any of these lines, the tread is too worn.

Check the age

Tires have a lifespan, and once they reach a certain age, they should be replaced. You can find the age of a tire on its sidewall. Just look for the number after “DOT.” This stands for Department of Transportation, and it indicates the week and year the tire was made. So, for example, if you see “DOT:30 14” on a tire, it was made in the 30th week of 2014.

Check the condition

Even if the tread and age are both okay, that doesn’t mean the tires are in good condition. Look for things like cuts, bulges, and punctures. If you see any of these, the tires are probably not safe to use.

Check the size

Finally, make sure the tires are the right size for your car. You can usually find this information on the sidewall of the tire. Just look for the number after “Ply” or “Load.” This is the maximum weight the tire can carry. If the number doesn’t match the weight limit of your car, the tires are too heavy.

When you’re shopping for used tires, it’s important to be aware of four things: the tread, age, condition, and size. If you can’t find the information you need on the tires themselves, ask the seller for it. And if you have any doubts, it’s always best to buy new tires.
