Melbourne East Disability Advocacy
Melbourne East Disability Advocacy is a community program that was founded in 1981 under the name Citizen Advocacy Inner East. It is run independently of the government and the human services industry by a volunteer management committee. At the federal level, the Department of Social Services (DSS) is the only source of funding for it.
People with intellectual disabilities can get advocacy support from Melbourne East Disability Advocacy, a non-profit community program. Direct assistance is given by our professional, paid staff. When a person with an intellectual disability is paired with an enthusiastic volunteer, known as a "citizen advocate," it may also be provided by volunteer citizen advocates.
Similar programs are offered across Australia, including five in Victoria that serve both urban and rural areas. In accordance with the National Standards for Disability Services, our organization offers services to the municipalities of Boroondara, Monash, Manningham, Maroondah, and Whitehorse. We support those who have intellectual disabilities and work to ensure that their voices are heard when important decisions affecting their lives are made.
Melbourne East Disability Advocacy (MEDA) supports individuals' current assets and fosters their capacity to speak up for themselves.
In Melbourne's eastern suburbs, in the local council districts of Whitehorse, Booroondara, Manningham, Monash, and Maroondah, we work with individuals who have an intellectual disability.
MEDA Individual Advocacy Program
People with intellectual disabilities, their support staff, friends, and family frequently get in touch with us when they think having an advocate might be helpful.
We meet with the individual, determine the problem or choice that is affecting them, find out what they want to happen, and then create an advocacy strategy. As part of this strategy, we might accompany the person to meetings where decisions will be made, assist them in speaking up in front of their support staff, or get in touch with other organizations like the Office of the Public Advocate, Victoria Police, Disability Services Commissioner, or VCAT.
Volunteer Citizen Advocate Program
Over the past 30 years, MEDA has successfully run a Volunteer Citizen Advocate Program. In order to ensure that the voice of people with intellectual disabilities is heard and that their human rights are upheld, this program recruits members of the community, matches them with those individuals who have expressed a need for an advocate, and provides the community member with the support necessary to act as their partner's constant, critical presence.
MEDA currently has numerous partnerships with active volunteer citizen advocates.
Work we do:
Working with adults who have intellectual disabilities is our area of expertise.
We also assist those who have sustained a brain injury.
Work we do not do:
Sadly, we lack the funding to work with kids who have intellectual disabilities.
We don't work with people who are intellectually normal but have mental health issues.
We do not offer general case management, family conflict mediation, or counseling.
