Victorian School of Languages

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) is a school run by the government with a long-standing determination to provide language programs for students from Years 1-12 who are not able to access to studying the languages they are studying in their primary schools. The school’s language program is taught face-to-face in language centers across the state as well as through the Distance Education model. The school was founded in 1935 when it introduced classes on Saturdays on the campus of MacRobertson Girls` High School for students who wanted to master modern languages. The first classes were offered taught in Italian as well as Japanese. Today, the VSL provides over 40 languages throughout Victoria to 13,000 students taking face-to face classes, and 1400 students who are enrolled in distance education.

The Victorian School of Languages is an official school that is committed to providing classes in the language for students from the years 1-12 that do not have access to studying these languages in their regular schools. The school’s language program is taught through face-to-face classes in various centres throughout the state, and via the distance learning method.

The VSL is run in accordance with government policies and priorities. It is committed to helping the Victorian schools to achieve the language participation goals that are set by the federal government.

Students are drawn from all three school sectors. The VSL is also a resource for international Students as well as a few of adults. It is the largest of all VCE language provider, with more than 3500 VCE students. For many languages with low level of participation The VSL is the sole provider that can provide VCE-level instruction.

It is the VSL is home to a School Council which meets monthly and provides broad-based direction and leadership at the level of the school. The council includes representatives from the Ethnic Communities Council, Independent and Catholic Schools as along with members from the Tertiary Sector.

The overall staffing arrangement and the administrative and curriculum support are coordinated from The VSL Head Office, where the Assistant Principal and Principal are located. The administration at the top includes Area Managers and Principal Class (Leading teachers). The section for Distance Education is run by full-time teachers as well as some employees on a casual basis. The department is located in the Head Office.

The majority of the time, the VSL offers classes for students in the school year at the same level they would be in their regular schools. However due to the need for enrollment, certain multi-level classes require to be arranged, especially in the less developed languages. The VSL has designed curriculum materials that meet these requirements in teaching and provides professional development for teachers.

The school boasts a prestigious track record of teaching languages to the local community. The school was founded in 1935 when it introduced classes on Saturdays at the MacRoberston Girls’ High School for students who wanted to learn about mordern language. The first classes were offered taught in Italian as well as Japanese.

It was a model that proved successful which was later adopted by different Australian states. Its Saturday School of Modern Languages or VSL as it was referred to in the past, was able to meet the needs of language of their diverse society. it expanded over time in response to the needs of Victoria’s languages both in country and city regions. The VSL offers more than 40 languages in Victoria to 13,000 students who attend Face-to-Face classes as well as 1400 students who are enrolled in Distance Education.
