Since the Club’s inception, they have been focusing on developing and maintaining a strong Junior Program. Waverley Baseball Club is well-known for its junior development program. It starts at T-Ball at 5 years of age and continues through all levels until it reaches Under 18.
The Club has a strong reputation for coaching, teaching and managing young players to their full potential.
Waverley Baseball Club has more than 20 players who have completed its junior program and are now eligible to compete in senior national and international competitions. Similar numbers have signed professionally with Major League Baseball teams in the United States. About 50 of their junior players have also graduated to college in the United States. The Waverley Baseball Club was founded in 1959. It was previously known as the Glen Waverley RSL youth baseball club. The current name Waverley Baseball Club was adopted by them in the 1960’s, when it was feared another baseball club might be formed under the name “Waverley”.
The Waverley Baseball Club competed for the first time in a competition known as “D Grade” in the Victorian Baseball Association Winter Season competition.
The club management knew from the beginning that a junior program was essential for the success of the Waverley Baseball Club. Alf Mann, who was a former president of the club, and a man dedicated to the cause, began to recruit people to coach and manage the junior section of the organisation.
Waverley Baseball Club was founded in these pioneer years. They continue to promote and preserve this culture today. Their idea to run a school-based competition at which five primary schools were involved was an example of this. This was the foundation of their early junior program. It also saw a significant increase in (domestic club team) clubs.
