Their Story
Everything started in 1954 when Teiko Kumon, the mother of a young child, discovered a math test in his pocket. Takeshi Kumon, the youngster in question, was in the second grade at the time. His mother asked her husband for advice after noticing that his test results weren't as good as they usually were. Toru Kumon, a math instructor in a high school at the time, was her spouse. Toru then started creating arithmetic exercises for his son Takeshi to allay his wife's worries.
Toru Kumon thought that a teacher's job is to help students develop a self-learning mindset. To ensure that Takeshi could use the learning materials each day and steadily advance his skills, he underwent a great deal of trial and error when developing the resources for his son. Toru Kumon knew that many senior high school students struggled with their math studies due to poor calculating skills based on his experience as a high level instructor. As a result, he concentrated on improving Takeshi's math abilities and produced resources that allowed his son to study on his own. Toru Kumon did this because he was aware from his own educational experiences that students could only develop true academic aptitude by moving forward on their own.
The materials that Toru Kumon developed in 1955 served as the model for the Kumon worksheets that are used today. Toru Kumon wrote out calculation problems on loose-leaf paper for Takeshi. Takeshi immediately honed his skills by spending 30 minutes a day studying the books his father had written. He was able to do differential and integral calculus as a result while he was only a few months into sixth grade. After having success with Takeshi, Toru Kumon invited some neighborhood kids to come study at his house. He gave them the same instruction that he had given to Takeshi. They all significantly enhanced their academic performance as a result. Toru Kumon saw this and wanted his educational approach to help as many kids as possible reach their full potential. Therefore, he made the decision to build more Maths Centers and open an office in Osaka in 1958. The number of Kumon students started steadily growing after that year. Toru Kumon's mission was to maximize student potential by empowering them to learn at a pace that was right for them, with the ultimate goal being to self-learn high school-level material.
Children have the capacity to develop from birth. Students gain the ability to learn independently as they practice reading, writing, and math. At Kumon, they view education as the cultivation of children's capacity for future self-fulfillment and realization of their aspirations. Kumon is not constrained by the limitations of language, culture, or history because it was created out of a father's love for his son. The Kumon Method is continuing to reach more students worldwide as more people learn about its advantages.
